So... I got a bit carried away with my horn upgrade. The stock horns on the BRZ are pathetic. I generally don’t use my horn that often, but when I do, it’s because I REALLY need someone to pay attention/stop what they are doing. The stock horns weren’t really up to the task, so I decided on a slight upgrade... Skip to 5:00 for a sound demo.

Damn son. I thought I was obnoxious with the Stebel Nautilus.
Please tell me you leave it on “t

Haha, I do, but I rarely use my horn more than once or twice a week maybe . You have to do something REALLY stupid to get me to the point of using my horn... especially this horn.

More than any reasonable person would spend on a horn upgrade, lol. My excuse
is that i
t does have the ability to be used to inflate tires, and even BRIEFLY run air tools if you need to knock a bolt loose or something. I even plan on using it to tweak tire pressures at autocross next season.
I just haven’t added the quick-connect coupling for an air line because I need to get a t-connector. The pump is way overpowered for that little 2 gallon tank, so it can charge it up pretty quickly from 0 to 150 PSI (less than a minute to go from 110 to 150 for “horn duty.”
This is the specific kit I purchased:

The smaller the something , the funnier it is! This is usually the kind of thing people put on their bro-trucks. On the BRZ, it’s just hilarious.

I live in a state with inspections, and the first thing every mechanic does after pulling the car into the garage is to test the horn.
I’d be afraid someone would have a heart attack.

When the car goes in for an inspection, or a dealership repair, I will most definitely leave it in the OFF position, lol.
I actually had these on my last car (an Outback) and one time I forgot to switch them off. Was sitting in the waiting area of the dealership and suddenly heard “HOONNNKKK!!!” followed by a bunch of shouting and commotion. I was terrified that someone would come storming in, but instead after a few seconds I heard it again. And again.
In the hour I spent waiting for my car, I heard it about 20 times. I found out later they actually took the car to the VW dealership right across the street, and drove around trolling all of their employees. When I got the car back in the “pickup bay,” the service manager actually ran across the building in her heels to tell me that everyone thought it was hilarious, and to ask me to show her how it was set up.
So that worked out, lol.

Someone let a set of these rip under an overpass a few weeks ago. Totally useless, as they are so loud you have no idea where they’re coming from. I was on a bike and it startled me pretty bad. Definitely took my focus off the road. I was left with the overwhelming urge to exact a high degree of violence on whoever had honked.
I use my horn maybe once a year, so horn fetishes are pretty foreign to me.

Mine aren’t quite as loud since they are under the hood, on top of the engine. Most folks who install these have them mounted under the body pointed at the ground, so the sound just bounces up from under the car. Mine are slightly muffled, but obviously still loud. Also, having the solenoid at the rear of the car means the 10-foot line running to the horn is un-pressurized. They recommend installing the solenoid right by the horns for a “sharper,” instantaneous blast, but with my setup, the air has to rush through a 10 foot line first, which softens that initial blast, making it less “jarring,” if that makes sense.
More importantly, though, in instances where I’ve used my stock horn in the past, they never seemed to have much of an effect on anything. If someone was moving over on me and I honked, or turning in front of me, and I honked, they just continued to do what they were doing. By contrast, people completely abort whatever maneuver they were attempting when they hear these horns. You don’t need to know where it is coming from. The whole point of the horn is to get the attention of the folks immediately around you, so that they wake up, and pay attention, or glance around, and become aware of some sort of hazard. The stock horns simply didn’t do that, whereas these do. You say that horns took your focus off the road... but that’s the point. Horns are meant to draw your attention. I am completely against people who honk their horns every ten seconds because they are impatient and want traffic to move, or use it as an audible “middle finger.” I use my horn only when I need to get your attention... maybe once or twice a week here in Chicago, where nobody knows how to fucking drive :(
I definitely get you, though. You have to be “situationally aware” before you honk these horns for fun. I wanted to honk them in a tunnel the other day, but there was a cyclist at the far other end of the tunnel, so I didn’t.

ha - that is awesome. There are folks that collect the old railroad horns with discussions on the different tones and how engineers each had their own “style” using them.
I honestly use my horn a fair amount - i am pretty quick to do a short >beep beep< to get somebody’s attention or wake them up , both other vehicles and pedestrians. I do a fair amount of downtown urban driving and I’ve saved myself on a number of occasions from folks backing into me or pulling out into the side of me when folks were just looking the other direction. It’s helpful keeping pedestrians with their nose in their cell phone from walking off the curb into traffic as well. But I do agree, in rural areas or on the highway horns are nearly useless...

I installed a second OE-style horn with a deeper tone to complement the stock horn on my Mazda3 for the same reason. People would do dumb stuff, I’d honk, they’d continue completely unfazed. When I was delivering pizzas and spending 40 hours a week on the road, it happened constantly. Adding the second horn helped a whole lot without escalating all the way to an air horn.

But that’s when you need it the most. You can always turn it down to honk for someone to move at a green light, or if you want to let someone know you are outside.
You need train horn for emergencies.

There used to be a guy in my area with an Acura TL with a train horn. So unassuming until he pushed the button.

This guy is a typical attention seeking whore. He probably uses these to get more attention from vape bros for his POS weak 86 miata imitation . #sad.
